University of Latvia – the venue of SC 2020

The University of Latvia has consistently been Latvia’s national, leading university of influential standing. In terms of the number of students, the University of Latvia is also the largest university in the country. It is the largest comprehensive university in Latvia, holding a solid place in development of the entire education system and overall economic growth of the country.

The University of Latvia was founded on September 28, 1919. Its study and research traditions span centuries. The mission of the University of Latvia is to promote the growth of Latvian society and the state by guaranteeing students the opportunity to obtain excellent higher education and professional skills, as well as to develop scientific and artistic creativity.

The University of Latvia is a modern centre of academic and professional studies, which, along with research in natural, social and technical sciences, humanities and medicine, provides higher education opportunities of various types and levels to residents of Latvia and other countries. The University of Latvia plays a decisive role in development of the academic traditions, national economy, education, environment and health protection, Latvian language and culture. The position and expertise of the University of Latvia is essential for decision making in the public administration process.

Research activities at the University of Latvia take place in 13 faculties, as well as 17 scientific institutes. Here, research is conducted in more than 50 research areas. Scientists from the University of Latvia have developed significant studies, contributing to the competitiveness of the national economy and improving the society’s quality of life. The UL evolves as a modern academic institution, providing the environment and infrastructure for outstanding achievements in research, studies and creativity.

The University of Latvia is taking major steps in advancing its research and academic goals. Within the next few years, one of the most progressive study and research centres in Northern Europe – the University of Latvia Academic Centre – will be established in Torņakalns. The House of Nature opened its doors in 2015, and at the end of 2018 the construction of the House of Science was completed. By 2022, the UL Academic Centre will be augmented by the House of Letters that will accommodate the faculties of humanities and social sciences, institutes and the Library. This development is to be followed by a Technology Centre, University hotels, academic square, modern sports infrastructure, parking for cars and bicycles.
